About Chinuk Trading Company
Chinuk Trading Company will be an online and in-store retailer of Indigenous food products. Chinuk was imagined, and has been supported by the Vancouver Native Health Society. Prior to Chinuk, the VNHS through its Tu’wusht program (meaning “We Belong” in the Tla’amin Coast Salish dialect) had been providing the urban Indigenous population of Vancouver with the opportunity to access the natural environment and nutritious traditional foods. Through seeing the value of this program, Chinuk was imagined.
The Chinuk Trading Company has three goals:
- To provide an income stream to the VNHS to support their continued work to support the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health of the urban Indigenous population of Vancouver;
- To create economic opportunities for Indigenous food producers by creating a means of accessing the market and showcasing their products, and also by reinvesting in the Indigenous food production economy; and
- To increase access to Indigenous culture through food for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
